Research

Song 1 Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend

https://youtu.be/Bg59q4puhmg

  • Both performance and narrative having cuts to Avril Lavigne preforming the song between the narrative aspect
  • Amplification in the sense they portray the narrative of a girl desiring to be the boyfriend of a man who she believes has an unworthy partner but also shows a darker side of the girl getting in between the couple almost bullying the girl in order to make her "disappear" and claim the boy for herself
  • High production - professional camera shots and expensive sets with well put together editing
  • Ideals presented are morally grey as it is those of taking someone else's boyfriend as you do not deem the girl worthy enough, could link into a young adult/teen audience who relate to liking someone who they believe deserves a better partner than their current s/o
  • The songs genre is Pop punk/rock it represents this through the mise-en-scene used in clothing having the main girl wear dark clothes with black hair and chains representative of punk, Avril Lavigne's pink highlight and the setting for the  main performance being pink is reflective of the pop side
  • The areas featured are shown as bright and "fun" whilst the people are presented as being more monotone and sad with the girls fighting over a man
  • Teens and young adults who enjoy pop punk and rock are the target audience and it appeals to them in its use of young actors with a theme relevant to a fair amount of young people, the song also focuses on being radio friendly being censored suggesting it aimed for a wider target audience

  • Covers ideas of love and relationships and how one feels when wanting a partner who is already taken
  • Editing cuts between shots of the performance and narrative but is slower paced giving room to breathe for each individual clip
  • The artist is represented through having their own private stage with performers showing them as important and respected
  • saturated colours which are dimly lit having a effect of a darker more old-school tone
  • long distance to wide angle shots having one or more characters in frame whilst being close enough to be visible, low angles used on Avril to show signs of superiority, high angled shots use don the girlfriend most likely in relation to how she is looked down upon
  • Use casual punk/alt clothes on the main man and outgoing girl with more traditional nerdy style clothes on the girlfriend - the glasses reinforce this stereotype which makes her reminiscent of Velma from scooby doo, the preforming Avril Lavigne still wears a casual shirts and shorts which are more feminine. The locations a golf family fun centre with a special stage for Avril Lavigne's performance
  • 85 - 90 shots used in first 2 minutes
  • I think 10 locations used even though technically its set in 1 place

Song 2 Weezer - Perfect Situation

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwv-iRvyDZg

  • Primarily performance with the song being preformed throughout a fair amount of the narrative aspects
  • Amplification the songs lyric tell the story of someone wanting to confess and struggling with accepting their feelings whilst in the perfect situation - the video tells a similar story but changes it to being someone in love with a lead singer of a band and then going on stage to preform rather than being with them
  • High production values
  • Ideas and goals shown are those of accepting the feelings and taking advantage of a perfect situation but rejecting the idea and taking advantage of the chance to become a music star
  • clothing choices of casual jumper and shirts with some more rock outfits reflecting the alternative and indie genre
  • People represented as being stars who do not wish to be in the lime light
  • Target audience of young adults and late teens who are outside of the main areas of society and looking for more alt rock styles which help resonate with emotional feelings of love

  • Covers subjects of romance and feelings of disappointing yourself when given the opportunity
  • Fast paced editing cutting between each shot within a few seconds
  • Band represented as an average style rock band with the lead singer Rivers seeming out of place as if he does not belong
  • Lighting is low - key making it dim, colours feel desaturated but are not black and white just simply flat
  • Lots of long distance wide shots showing off the band and Rivers
  • Mis-en-scene location of a stage shows the music side and the casual clothes worn by the main artist could signify how they don't have a passion for what they are doing or are simply different to the normal
  • Like 60-70 shots
  • around 8 settings

Song 3 Foo Fighters Everlong

  • Concept video
  • Disjuncture link to the lyrics
  • Editing adds in special effects and filters, fairly slow pacing
  • Band is represented through the lead singer Dave Grohl who is the main actor but the video does not have performance elements
  • Colours are desaturated with it having low-key lighting
  • Long shots and close ups on faces
  • Mise-en-scene punk and biker style fashion with leather jackets but also old fashioned styled clothes worn by the antagonistic characters, locations of a house party and obscure old buildings in the woods
  • Around 40 shots in the first 2 minutes
  • Around 6 locations

  • Medium - high production values having unique sets and special effects
  • Ideas of wanting to help someone else when in love are shown with themes of punk/biker aesthetic linking to the target audience of the rock/grunge style
  • Music genre is shown through clothing choices with the leather jacket and spiked hair being symbolic of grunge and rock
  • Appeals to the target audience of early adult grunge and rock fans through the songs riffs and the obscure imagery adding a unique style to the video

Overall

  • Cover subjects of love and the desires people gain when in those feelings
  • Primarily contain a narrative and often use a performance element of the band
  • Amplify the lyrics meaning giving a new interpretation to an audience with some being a disjuncture having little relevance to the words of the song
  • Editing is often used to make the video slower paced
  • Band/artist  is commonly portrayed to be higher than other people having their own area and also usually being the main character in the narrative
  • Desaturated colours, they don't jump out onto you but are clearly there making sure not to be monochrome, has dim lighting it is low-key
  • Close up and long distance shots commonly used with low angles on the artist and eye level/high angles on others
  • Used around  locations in order to have multiple settings even if they are interlinked, costumes reflect the genre being casual or more punk depending on the song, e.g weezer have more casual clothes whilst everlong is more punk
  • Average of 67 shots with one genre being much higher in the first 2 minutes - varies from 40-70+
  • Around 7 locations on average used

Indie/alternative rock - codes an conventions
  • Lyrics are amplified with the main ideas of the song carrying through the video but being enhanced to give the video its own narrative
  • The videos are a mix of narrative and performance sometimes with the artist singing the song during the narrative
  • Slow paced editing used allowing every visual to breathe and be viewed, aren't many filters or changes to the visuals used
  • Does not contain many if any graphics
  • Artist are represented as being important and usually play a major role in the narrative side sometimes preforming the songs during it
  • Desaturated colours and dim lighting
  • lots of long distance and wide shots to show the cast of the video with low angles and close ups on the artist
  • Locations usually change to have both inside and outside, stage for the performance whether it has an audience or not depends on the video
  • Costumes usually reflect the artists, the artist in the video usually stands out during the performance part but this can have exceptions, if the artist is more punk it is likely they will wear punk clothes while the rest of the cast is more casual reflecting the time of filming
  • Medium - high production values, high quality video with good editing and feels unique to that song
  • Ideas of feeling out of place or being annoyed with yourself presented, themes of regret and ideas of love are present, not knowing how to accept or what to do with personal feelings
  • Areas usually not the primary focus of the video as it mainly focuses on the artist/characters
  • Target audience is late teens and young adults who are less involved with society, arguably people more interested in their confused feelings of love for others

L/O: To plan an effective product aimed at a specific audience using appropriate codes and conventions

Planning

Name of band  - (not 100%) Romance Dawn,

Song - Why Bother - Weezer

Message of song - Someone struggling to allow themselves into a relationship, no longer sees the point after the pain they have been through twice before yet still contemplates the idea asking for someone to break their heart next summer, the singer wants a girlfriend but fears rejection even though they have immense feelings for someone

Music Genre - Alternative/indie rock

Representation of band - Band will be represented as casual, they aren't these big world class stars they are just normal people who can sing, will have their own place to preform for the performance parts - some form of stage or an isolated room. want the singer of band and possibly another member to be

Video style - amplification, have a narrative with a similar theme to the song but not directly depicting the lyrics word for word

Video style - Both performance and narrative having cuts between the 2 - different setting for performance and narrative

Locations - Some form of place representative of a house, Some form of outside location for the 2 characters to speak to each other, (school or street/shop as possibilities)

People needed - Person to play singer/main character, person to play the love interest, small side characters who are used to fill up space when the 2 main characters are going places or stood talking, probably 2 or more other band members than the singer

Band Logo - Ideas, possibly have the initials of the band in a circle similar to foo fighter or Weezer where it is a simple logo

Narrative Outline - (rough ideas for reference) (mc = main character/lead singer girl = love interest)

Idea possibly - Mc starts pressing the play button to the song on his phone and the sound is diegetic before he puts the headphones on or earphones in or puts a cd into a cd player which comes out of the speakers than in a cyclical format the video ends with him taking out the cd from the player incorporating diegetic and non diegetic sound

idea - Have 8 seconds in the song before and after it starts and ends where the vocals do not exist - song is 2 minutes and 5/6 seconds so leaves around 3 seconds for opportunity where the song does not start in the 2 minutes

Open with the 2 characters meeting (location undecided) in some form whether through bumping into each other or being introduced through friends, possibly sitting next to each other in school

Shots of a phone with messages between mc and girl

Overall mc will not end up with the girl which links to the lyrics of the song and the them of loving someone but not being able to get with them due to your own self incompetence and fear for the worst outcome

The lyric why bother starts 18 seconds into the song

 16-9-22                                               Target Audience
L/O: To represent our target audience to enable successful targeting

  • 14-18 year olds
  • Both genders male and female
  • Most likely no job but may work part time in a shop or restaurant for some quick cash
  • Any race but will most likely be predominately white men from the west
  • Public school at a standard level of education - is irrelevant if they are getting a higher level of education
  • Interested in older indie/alt rock music and artists from before 2010s,  spends their time on social media and talking to a select few as the majority are introverted in some aspects, have interests in romance films and old classics from the 2000s and 90s. Would keep up with some new shows e.g Breaking Bad, BetteR Call Saul, The Boys, Stranger Things
  • Have a neutral liking of school, dislike a fair amount of it but enjoy their favourite subjects - likely to be more creative than academic with a passion for the arts or subjects such as music and media
  • Hobbies would entail listening to music, watching shows and some enjoying mediums such as games or playing music
  • Suburban area
  •  Their online presence is important alongside what their favourite bands and artists are releasing
  • Their friends would describe them as entertaining with unique tastes
  • Would be passionate about music and interested in old and new releases with favouritism to older artists
  • Product would appeal to these people as it uses a song sung by a popular indie/alt band which resonates with the younger 14 - 18 year old audience interested in the music and teen love.

They are strugglers - alienated from normal social  society

Changes - need to film more narrative footage  use darker colour palette- get longer footage so can trim it down and isn't too short - want footage of the 2 characters in the school

 24 seconds total needed
need footage of the introduction in which he plays music. Need ending footage
possibly redo preforming scenes
