Sound

L/O: To explore the use of sound in films

Music

In a horror film I would expect to hear music in either a high pitch to pierce your ears or a low pitch and a low tempo. This is different to the faster paced tempo and even balance of high and low pitch, possibly including vocals I would expect to hear in an action film. In a thriller I would expect music to have a slow tempo leading up to an intense moment speeding up and having an intense sound to it. In a comedy film I would expect lighthearted music at a steady pace with a few songs having vocals. In a science fiction film I would expect the music to be made to sound more electronic and less like it was coming from a person playing an instrument and more like a machine, I would also expect no vocals.

In this clip of the Joker it begins with Diegetic sound of Joker doing a comedy scene saying "Knock knock" with the sound of the gun clicking from being shot with no bullets in after the sound of his arms hitting the sofa and the gun falling on the floor can also be heard. Then there is a sound of an audience clapping which is hard to tell if it's diegetic and is in Jokers head or is non-diegetic and is added in for only the audience to hear. There is then a non-diegetic song playing which stops after Joker finishes his transformation and transfers into sounding like a diegetic sound form the way ingest quieter and more crackly. There is then the diegetic sound of a doorbell followed by draws being rummaged through and scissors being closed and opened followed by speech from Joker.

Foley

The door creaking open and closing as well as the box being put on the table.

The triggers on the controller.

The blinds being opened.

The box rushing open

The dog being pushed onto the floor and being kicked away

The cupboard being ran into

The ball rolling into the box

The footsteps of the dog and sounds of the box moving

There is music in the scene

The music has a ominous tone making someone feel uncomfortable

When asked why he killed three men is when the sounds changed

Joker is talking with Murray and causing a reaction from the crowd

You can tell what's happening on screen from the fact it"s mostly voice lines

There are a few short moments of silence

  1. Fantastic Zack - you've chosen quite a difficult scene to look at from the Joker as sound is used to show his transformation and suggest his possible mental state - we are not meant to be sure if it's diegetic or non diegetic sound.
