Mise-en-scene

L/O: To explore the use of Mise-en-scene in films

  • The person enjoys playing music
  • They play Guitar and have amps implying they are not only for display
  • Seem to also listen to music as their are posters on the wall of what look like bands
  • There is clothes all on a chair with folders and boxes on the floor suggesting the person is more than likely young as they do not care about the state of the room
  • They have a computer but the desk looks to be a mess meaning they most likely don't use it often

Mise-en-scene:

Settings and Props:

For Science Fiction,
I would expect a high possibility of the setting being in space whether on ships or on a planet other than earth. If not in space I would expect some link to actual scientists and something they have done. For props I think unknown technology as well a very white colour palette which goes  with the ragged clothes worn by the cast.

For Romantic Comedy,
Either a small town or a large city with shops and restraints frequently visited by the main cast. For props I would expect an amount of alcoholic drinks alongside food with Phones also being a priority depending on when it was set.

For Horror,
A isolated town or building or a rural location away from normal society. Props would most likely include a large amount of weapon along Side masks for covering a persons face with other broken parts of a house to make a place seem even more isolated.

Costume, Hair and Makeup:

Character 1,
The person is wearing a hat  usually seen worn by people who explore in a stereotypical film which makes sense alongside the shirt and coat with a bag handle thrown over the shoulder. It looks like the outfit someone who would be an explorer would wear and the makeup on the face to give him a unclean look as if he has been in a desert or forest. He has a professional look to his work.

Character 2,
This person is wearing a skirt with a white top and a pink jacket whilst holding a pink phone and carrying a pink handbag on her arm with long blonde hair. This could suggest she is dressed up for a form of party as well as the clothes seeming to be fashion in the early 2000's and before.

Character 3,
This person has a rugged hairstyle with creased clothes implying he does not care about his appearance at that moment.

Facial Expressions and Body Language:

Picture 1,
On the right the man seems to have a happy expression with his hands resting on the table looking as if he is enjoying himself. On the left the woman is sat back in her chair looking disappointed or annoyed. This Ould suggest she is distancing herself from the man who is leaning forward to get closer and talk more. The woman in the middle looks disappointed with her head angled towards the man most likely meaning she was the one talking to him.

Picture 2,
There is a man stood looking angled down alongside others but with his stance being to the side not straight forward implying he is walking away from something. The other people are looking down or looking at the man in the middle with none seeming happy rather concerned.

Lighting and Colour

Low Key Lighting - Produces sharp contrasts of light and dark areas, deep, distinct shadows are formed
High Key Lighting - Lighting is natural and realistic to our eyes, produces brightly lit sets or a sunny day

Uses Low Key Lighting to give a clear image of the 2 characters. It gives a uncomftorable feeling with the shadow of the door being distinct and light coming in from somewhere shining on the back wall. It suggests that this scene possibly has a dark tone and that this is not a place people want to be.

Positioning of characters/objects within the frame

Picture 1,
2 people are sat apart on a sofa as if they have had an argument after talking with the messy cups on the table. This could suggest the two people don't dislike each other but also aren't on good terms.

Picture 2,
The 2 people are stood close together suggesting they are friends or a team with them each holding a gun in the same way further suggesting they work together.

Mise-en-scene scene
There is a man in the clothes of a stereotypical pirate in the centre suggesting that he is indeed a pirate. His hat and long hair as well as the colour of his clothes compared to the 2 people next to him suggest he is more important. The 2 people share the same design of clothes wearing hats off a pirate with red and white clothes. They are both holding what looks like a gun with a bayonet on the end suggesting they may be guards. They are in a room with a brown colour and art painted onto the walls with food on a table. This could suggest it is a form of special meal as the food swell prepared. The lighting makes the characters stand out with the food being partly in shadow. The man to the right of the mani n the centre looks engaged whilst the centre is pointing looking as if he is explaining something.

  1. This is fantastic Zack!! Well done - a fantastic example of how to explain the mise-en-scene and it's constructed meanings.
