L/O: to explore the use of characterisation in a film
Case Study Characters
Joker - Joaquin Pheonix
Jokers Mother ( Penny Fleck ) - Frances Conroy
Murray Franklin - Robert De Niro
The protagonist of Joker is Arthur Fleck the Joker who is a mentally ill comedian who becomes a criminal due to his upbringing. He is estimated to be about 45 years old.
The antagonist is hard to say as Joker is both a protagonist and antagonist but Murray could also be seen as an antagonist in some sense.
There is no real sidekick in Joker he is mainly a stand alone character
The actor for Joker made 4.5 million from the film.
Characters
The main character of Joker is Arthur Fleck who is the Joker. The story is about this character and him doing his own thing whilst finding things out about his mother. The story is being told by the Joker and his appearance is very underweight looking with long hair and is fairly tall as well. He does not look healthy or in a good state which helps bring forth his personality. He speaks in a hostile tone and behaves in unusual ways mainly due to his mental state.
Propp Theory
- Hero - Joker - leads the story ands has a goal in mind with his comedian ideals and helping his mother.
- Villain - Joker/Murray - No clear villain but the Joker from a moral standpoint is the antagonist but Murray is the character who stands against Joker.
- Donor - Randall - Gave Joker a gun
- Princess - The closest thing to a princess in the Joker film is Sophie Dumond who Joker has fantasies with which he mixes up with reality.
It's an interesting film to apply this to as it plays with exactly these ideas. Could you argue that Arthur is the hero and The Joker is the villain??
